Guide

Choose a real beginner model, plan paper and practice time, and follow a printable folding checklist with links to illustrated instructions.

Choose a model you can finish

A cup or dog face is a good first session because each fold changes the visible shape without a complicated collapse. The traditional hat introduces folding matching layers on the front and back. The boat extends that hat shape with two open-and-flatten moves, which often take a little practice. Automatic recommendations use your chosen purpose and experience; they do not invent new paper geometry. An explicit model choice always takes priority. For a group, fold a test copy yourself and use the spare-paper allowance for restarts or demonstrations.

Prepare paper and make accurate creases

Use a square for the cup and dog face, and a rectangle for the hat and boat. The size field sets a square’s side or a rectangle’s shorter edge; the planner uses a roughly 1:1.414 ratio for rectangular practice sheets. A4 and US Letter also work for the rectangular models. Ordinary thin paper is easier to manipulate than thick card stock. Align the corners before pressing the crease, hold them in place, and smooth from the middle outward. A larger sheet is often easier for beginners even though it produces a larger finished model.

Read the folds, then use the illustrated reference

A valley fold brings the two paper surfaces toward you; a mountain fold bends the ridge away from you. “Front layer” means only the visible sheet nearest you, not every layer at that corner. Opening a pocket and flattening it changes which edges are on the outside, so stop and check the shape before continuing. Each plan includes a checkpoint and a link to an independently published illustrated tutorial. The small diagram here explains only the starting paper and first crease. Text is useful as a checklist, but difficult layer changes are easier to understand with those illustrated views.

How the result is made

Rule-based recommendations select among four documented beginner folds. Paper dimensions, spare sheets and time estimates are calculated locally. Original concise instructions were checked against the linked illustrated sources; physical folding and arbitrary AI-designed crease patterns are not claimed.
